A Concrete Driveway We Poured in Mint Hill
The driveway in the photos is long and curved. It bends past a big stand of trees and gets wider near the house. It was one of our larger driveway pours.
Those straight lines across it are control joints. When the concrete cracks, the crack should follow one of them.
Look at the edges and you will see bare red clay. We pack that ground down before any concrete goes on it.

Before We Pour
What a Concrete Contractor Checks First in Mint Hill
On a Mint Hill driveway, the first thing we sort out is who owns the road out front. Matthews-Mint Hill Road, Lebanon Road and Idlewild Road are state-maintained, while most subdivision streets are the town's. On a town street, a new driveway connection or a changed driveway needs a Mint Hill ROW Use Permit. Changing a driveway's access onto a state road needs an NCDOT driveway permit from the local District Engineer's office. So for a new apron or a wider drive, we confirm with the town or NCDOT before we pour.
Around Pine Lake and Ezell Park, the county soil map is mostly Cecil, much of it on 2 to 8 percent slopes. Under the topsoil, firm and sticky red clay runs from about 8 to 42 inches down. That clay barely shrinks or swells, but soil surveys rate it weak under the weight of traffic. The Monroe airport weather station logs about 57 freezing nights in a typical year, and most thaw by the next day. On that ground and in that weather, the packed base under a driveway matters as much as the concrete on top.
In the neighborhoods between Pine Lake and Ezell Park, most home lots are half an acre or more. At least one in five tops an acre. Most homes there sit on crawl spaces, so front steps and stoops are common. If your front steps have cracked or pulled away from the door, we can replace them. Newer subdivisions like Telfair, Hidden Forest and Belle Grove Manor have homeowners associations on county record. If you live in one, ask the HOA whether it needs to see the plan before we pour.

FAQ
Mint Hill Concrete Contractor Questions
Can you replace concrete steps?
Yes. We tear out steps that are falling apart and pour new ones. Have photos of your steps ready when Axel calls.
Can a new driveway go over my septic field in Mint Hill?
Not without special approval. NC rules keep septic drain fields and their repair areas out from under pavement and vehicle traffic, unless specially approved. The town plan says much of Mint Hill's eastern planning area has no public water or sewer. If your home is on septic, find the drain field before we lay out the slab.
My lot backs up to a creek that feeds Goose Creek. Can I put a patio there?
Check the buffer line before you plan anything back there. Only part of Mint Hill drains to Goose Creek. Along those creeks, state rules keep vegetated buffers 100 to 200 feet from the water. Those Goose Creek buffers protect the Carolina heelsplitter, an endangered mussel. If the patio would land anywhere near that buffer, we check with the town before we pour.
